Challenge 'Serafim'

As you know, my sweet angel Serafim has passed the door to the other world, on the 20th of June. He was almost 15 years old (he'd be 15 by the 18th of September...) and has been with me since he got out from his mommy.

His image will never get out of my mind but I want the world to remember that precious creature aswell. So I asked (and still am asking!) people to make a little drawing/ painting/ manip of him...

The problem of social solidarity associations is that...they're too many, and we alone cannot help them all. But we can help some. One. And that makes a little difference for that One.

I decided I won't buy a completely useless item I was drooling at at eBay, which costs $50.

Instead, I'll donate that money (plus $20 kindly offered by ~Soulkipper, so $70!) to one of those associations, and you'll be the one to choose it!

Send me a note with the subject 'charity' and tell me which's the association I should donate to, and why.

The story that impresses me/ messes with my emotions the most, will be the winner.

Deadline to send your suggestions and (real life) stories: December, the 25th!

Association: Lupus Foundation of America
Cause: help finding a cure for Lupus
Mission: research and awareness
What's being done: not so much...It's not very publicized and many people don't understand what it does to people (Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system cannot always tell what is you and what is a foreign toxin or something to get rid of, which causes your own immune system and antibodies to attack your body).

Successful cases: 'I think I am the most successful case that I know of. I was diagnosed with SLE in 2004 at age sixteen. It took months to get a doctor to take me seriously which is actually pretty common. In that time my kidneys failed and I almost died before they got to the cause. It is really hard to treat lupus since every case is drastically different. The medications they had me on made my hair fall out. I was in the hospital for almost four months. I missed an entire year of school and still graduated on time.

The treatment I received from Riley Children's hospital was amazing. But it was hit or miss for awhile. Thanksgiving 2004 they told my family and my boyfriend I had a max of three days to live. I was going to die and that was considered fact. I was 73lbs when I woke up. I couldn't even lift my pinky. I had to re-learn everything. I couldn't walk, sit up, turn over, nothing. I was on dialysis for a year because of my kidney failure. I lost loads of self-esteem. And I couldn't really be in public. During that year I made a lot of progress. I didn't get a kidney transplant; my kidneys recovered.

It rarely ever happens this way. People don't just recover the use of their battered and failing kidneys. Doctors, even atheistic ones, called me a miracle. What happened to me, sadly, doesn't happen to everyone.

Anyway, I was doing school at home. And I was able to go part time the first semester of my senior year and full time the second semester. Although I'd have graduated with honors had I not gotten sick, I still graduated with my class. I was able to get a job. I was gaining weight. I had a great relationship with my parents. And my boyfriend and I were still together. (We still are <3)

A few years later, I've pretty much got my lupus controlled. It's essentially in "remission". I don't deal with too much on a day to day basis, but I know when something's wrong. And I'm on top of things enough to fix it before it escalates.

Cause: help to improve Sara Baker's (AKA :devgloryange life quality, after being paralyzed in a car accident
Mission: raise money for Sara and her single mom to pay for ongoing care
What's being done: iniciative to raise $2100 to buy Sara a computer called Brainfingers Cyberlink, to allow her to get back online, to her friends and to her art, which doesn't happend since the accident
Successful cases: We raised $1090 a few months ago to help her get home from the hospital after being there for 11 months

Cause: help those who suffer from leukemia and other blood diseases
Mission: "The cure is in us!" - to create a bone marrow donor registry and umbillical cord blood bank in Croatia, and extend it to the whole Europe and Worldwide, in order to find compatible donors and drive the procedures in a more effective way
What's being done: "I want life!" campaigns

Successful cases: Thanks to a young woman - Ana Rukavina Erceg -, it shows how one person can make a difference, and even though the help came too late for Ana, her example helped save many lives already, and will do so in the future. My best friend's mother might have survived had there been such a registry 5 years ago. But such cases of lost lives are what is motivating everyone inside this foundation to work even harder and educate people on the matter
